John Ballentyne trained as a dentist at Guy's hospital in London. He then undertook further training at Sheffield University for implant work. He started this practice in 1990 and his great passion outside dentistry is motor racing and cars generally. Mark Glennie, a very experienced dentist who trained at the Royal London Hospital, joined the practice in June 2007. His interests are music, films and West Ham United.

The dental nurses and receptionists have all been with the practice a long time and are all very experienced in making sure patients are put at ease and made as relaxed as possible. We hope the atmosphere of the practice is happy and relaxed - and as far from the 'Traditional Dentists' as possible!

Implants at Chelmsford dentist

Implants are used as ‘artificial tooth roots’ to replace missing teeth without having to touch the surrounding teeth. The dental implants are placed in the bone and allowed to heal and then crowns or bridges are permanently fixed on the top. They can be used for any situation from a single tooth to a complete set of teeth.

Do dental implants hurt?

The dental implants may cause soreness for a day to two, but usually not. How long does it take? - Placing the implants takes about an hour, but after that they are relatively short appointments. Does it last? - Yes, research shows that dental implants will last 15-20 years. Will I be able to feel it when it is in place? - No. Will it harm my other teeth? - No, they are not touched in any way.

Stage 1. Evaluation by Chelmer Village dentist near Malden or Chelmsford

Each patient undergoes a thorough clinical evaluation by the Chelmsford dentists to determine whether dental implants are possible. In most cases there are no absolute contra-indications to treatment, however risk factors such as smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and post irradiation therapy for cancers are causes for concern. An evaluation the dentist from Chelmer Village near Chelmsford and Malden involve measurement and X-rays to determine the amount of available bone into which the implant will be placed. Due to the nature of bone resorption after tooth extraction early placement of an dental implant is preferable. Diagnostic wax ups of the teeth may be required that enable the final tooth restoration to be visualized and the determination of the optimal position of the dental implant.

Stage 2. Dental Implant placement

Gentle surgical techniques are employed to prepare the bone and place the implant. The procedure is generally performed under local anaesthesia or with IV sedation to alleviate any apprehension. There is little postoperative pain or bruising. Once placed, osseointegration occurs over a period of between two to six months. At no time is the patient without teeth unless they elect to do so.

Stage 3. Connection to the dental implant.

If one views the dental implant as a replacement for the missing root then an abutment is an extension of this root that comes through the gum allowing the restoration to be built upon this. The abutment is firmly attached by the dentist to the underlying implant using a predetermined force giving long term stability to the restoration

Stage 4. Chelmsford dentist fixing the artificial teeth.

From single to multiple teeth, aesthetic functional restorations can be bonded in place by the Maldon dentist. These look and feel like natural teeth giving a confidence unequalled in cosmetic dentistry. Alternatively in the case of a patient missing all teeth, but unable for some reason to have as many dental implants, then a removable denture can be held in place using studs or a clip and bar that allows much increased retention and chewing efficiency when compared to conventional full dentures.

Stage 5. Follow up by the Chelmer Village dentist near Chelmsford and Maldon

All implants require careful maintenance and regular check-ups by the dentist although with professional instruction their care can be easily incorporated into a daily oral hygiene regime.

Sedation for nervous of dentists patients

If you are nervous about having dental treatment done or you need treatment which may be unpleasant (such as having a wisdom tooth extracted by the dentist) it is usually possible to have it done under sedation.
This involves an injection into a vein, usually in your hand, of a sedative which will make you relaxed and sleepy. You will then be able to be treated without all the anxiety and tension you might normally feel. Throughout the time you are under sedation you will be attached to monitors, similar to those used in intensive care units, to watch your heartbeat, blood pressure, etc.
is a very safe procedure - more so than a general anaesthetic which is itself very safe - and the monitoring is a wise precaution. After the dental treatment you will need someone to drive you home and look after you for the rest of the day. If you think this would help you to have the dental treatment you need please contact the dentists at the Chelmsford surgery near Maldon for an initial chat.

Crowns
What Are Crowns?

Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth, which have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as 'caps'.

Why Would I Need A Crown?

There are a number of reasons. For Instance:
The tooth may have been weakened by having a very large filling
You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth.
You may have had a root filling which will require a crown to protect it.
You may have had an accident and damaged the tooth.
It may hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

Bridges

A bridge is a method of replacing missing teeth which is permanently fixed in place. It involves crowning the teeth on either side of the gap and using the crowns to hold the false tooth. They are very strong and you don't have to worry about eating on them.

White fillings

Why would I need my teeth whitened?
There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin colour vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discoloured as we get older.
Your teeth can also be stained on the surface through food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and blackcurrant. Smoking can also stain teeth.

How long will my teeth stay whiter?
The effects of whitening can last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. Ask your dentist for their opinion before you start the treatment.
