Crown lengthening

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure to expose more of a tooth by removing gum tissue and, when necessary, bone.

Crown lengthening may be used when a broken tooth requiring treatment is below the gum line. It may also be a treatment option for a “gummy” smile, improving the proportion of tooth length and gum.

What is the treatment for crown lengthening?

Your dentist and periodontist will review your medical history and dental X-rays to evaluate the condition of your teeth, gums and jawbone.

A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area to be treated, then gum tissue is removed to expose more of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will be sutured, and a sterile bandage may be applied.

Your dentist will evaluate healing after one or two weeks and advise you on the next stage of the dental restoration treatment.
