A dental crown restores a damaged or weakened tooth, adding strength and preventing further damage.

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made replacement top for a tooth. A crown can restore the appearance and function of a damaged tooth. Crowns can be made from porcelain, resin, or ceramic as well as gold or non-precious metal alloys.

Why do I need a crown?

Teeth that are broken or damaged by decay, but have a healthy base, can be restored and strengthened with a crown.  The crown recreates the form of the tooth. Your bite becomes more comfortable and you will be able to smile with confidence.

What is the treatment for a crown?

Your dentist will first numb the area around the tooth to minimise discomfort. The damaged parts of the tooth will then be removed and the strongest part will be shaped to receive the dental crown.

Once the tooth is shaped, your dentist will take dental impressions. These will be used by the lab to create a crown which is precisely matched in shape and colour to the original tooth. A temporary crown may be fitted while the permanent crown is being prepared. On your return visit, the crown will be permanently bonded into place over the top of the prepared tooth.

How long can a crown last?
