Inlays and onlays are dental treatments that restore and strengthen damaged teeth.

What is an inlay?

An inlay is a customised composite resin insert that fits in the centre of your tooth. Inlays fill gaps, strengthen the tooth, limit further damage and reduce tooth sensitivity.

What is an onlay?

An onlay is applied to the exterior of a damaged or fractured tooth. Onlays are an adaptable treatment designed to reconstruct the shape and integrity of the tooth.

What is an inlay or onlay treatment?

You dentist will begin by numbing the area around the tooth with an anaesthetic. Once the tooth has been prepared by removing damaged or decayed parts, a dental impression will be taken.

The dental impression will be used to custom-make a small composite resin insert that will repair and restore the structure of the tooth.

During your second appointment to finish the treatment, the inlay or inlay will be positioned in or on the tooth and then bonded in place.

Inlays and onlays are a long-lasting dental treatment solution to retain the existing tooth structure. The repair is generally not noticeable, given the natural colour of the insert.
