Preventative dental treatments help to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy for a confident smile.

At Chelmer Village Dental, we believe that prevention is better than cure. Effective home tooth care routines and regular dental check-ups promote good oral health. Preventative dental actions reduce the risk of cavities, tooth decay, gum disease as well as bad breath.

What is preventative dentistry?

Preventative dentistry includes a range of treatments such as regular dental check-ups and professional hygiene cleaning.

Why do I need a check-up?

A routine check-up every six months or so is an effective way to ensure optimal dental health. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums, making notes for future reference. They will be able to monitor any change since your last visit and advise you on any dental treatment required to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

Regular dental check-ups from early childhood have life-long oral health advantages and can reduce the anxiety of dental treatment.

Your dentist will also be able to advise you on the most effective way to prevent oral health issues with home tooth care and periodic hygiene cleaning.

What is hygiene cleaning?

Hygiene cleaning is a great way to keep teeth looking and feeling good. A hygiene treatment cleans each tooth thoroughly, removing dental plaque, bacteria, tartar and superficial stains.

Your hygienist may perform a scale and polish. Alternatively, a small high-pressure jet of air, water and fine powder with a light abrasive action can be used to clean the surface and in between your teeth.

Are there other preventative dental treatments?

In addition to regular dental check-ups and hygiene cleaning, fluoride applications or sealants can protect your teeth.

If you participate in certain sports, your dentist may recommend a mouth guard to protect your teeth.

Is my home dental-health routine effective?

Brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste every day for two minutes in the morning after breakfast and at bedtime is a good basis for a home tooth-care routine.

Flossing and using a fluoride mouthwash can also help.

A healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet, reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption and regular exercise also contribute towards good oral health.
