A tooth extraction treatment permanently removes the damaged or broken tooth and root from your mouth.
Extractions are relatively routine procedures. Your dentist will first numb the area around the tooth. The tooth will be loosened and then pulled out.
With teeth that are broken below the gum line, or for some wisdom teeth, your dentist will make an incision in the gum and extract the tooth. The gum will then be sutured to promote healing.
After a tooth extraction, some bleeding may occur, but your dentist will make sure that healing begins normally. A blot clot should form in the gums at the extraction point. It is important not to dislodge the clot if possible.
Once the anaesthetic wears off, your mouth may feel a little sore for a day or two. Swelling can be reduced by using an icepack for periods of about 10 minutes at a time.
In the days following the extraction, it is advisable to avoid drinking hot drinks, smoking, using mouthwash or brushing the extraction site.
